Special Meeting 02/18/2017 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Guest Speaker – Dale Sievert - Magical World of Moss Gardening
A passionate moss gardener, Dale Sievert’s garden has been featured in a wide array of books and magazines, and he has written articles on moss for several national magazines. In this special afternoon tour and discussion, Dale will highlight some of the many moss varieties he grows, as well as the culture of moss, showing how he uses them on the ground, on rocks, and in containers. Dale started to garden when he was seven, and ran a tree and shrub nursery for many years. He embraced shade gardening in the late 1980s when the trees in his own yard got bigger. Dale began his Japanese-style garden in 2000 and became interested in moss gardening after visiting gardens in Japan a few years later.

Guest Speaker – Chris Baker - Taking Trees Out of Storage
Chris Baker full-time curator of bonsai at the Chicago Botanic Garden, where he maintains approximately 175 bonsai trees, will discuss taking trees out of storage. Baker has been studying and working on bonsai for more than 13 years. Previously, from 2011 to early 2014, he was an intern and volunteer at the United States National Arboretum's National Bonsai and Penjing Museum in Washington, D.C. As an active member of the Maryland bonsai community, Baker gave many demonstrations and talks at the Potomac Bonsai Association Spring Show in Washington, D.C., as well as to garden clubs. Baker spent six months in 2012 studying bonsai with third-generation bonsai master Tohru Suzuki at the Daijuen Nursery in Okazaki, Japan. Baker has always had an interest in horticulture, but his introduction to bonsai started with his purchase of a bonsai juniper as a gift for a friend. When asked why he is so passionate about bonsai, Baker says, "Bonsai is a representation of the beauty and power of nature; it's the perfect mix of artistry, horticulture, and mechanical skills—it's living art."

General Meeting 09/05/2017 6:30 PM

Guest Speaker – Richard Eyre
Richard Eyre developed a passion for gardening and conifers at a very early age. He was influenced by his parents and grandparents who were avid gardeners. In 1968, while working for the Peace Corps, Rich found a copy of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden series on dwarf conifers by Fred Bergman in his Peace Corps book locker in Bolivia. And it was while working in the Amazon jungle that he dreamed of raising rare conifers for a living. On his return in 1970, he began building his conifer collection. He realized his dream with his wife Susan and mother Margaret when they launched the business. The first trees were planted at Foxwillow Pines Nursery in 1988. Rich will give a talk with emphasis on dwarf plant material. Conifers, maples, beeches, ginkgo's.
