General Meeting 06/03/2014 6:30 PM

Guest Artist – Arthur Joura
Arthur Joura, Bonsai curator and Director of the bonsai program at the NC Arboretum in Asheville, NC. will style and pot an azalea and rock landscape as a Bonsai specimen. The landscape will be raffled at the end of the evening. Mr. Joura will be talking about saikei, or tray landscapes. Saikei began as a way to keep the art of bonsai alive in post-WWII Japan, when large traditional trees were unavailable. Subsequently saikei has become a specialty in its own right. Landscapes are built with younger, smaller trees and shrubs, then styled using traditional bonsai methods. More forgiving of mistakes than single-tree bonsai, saikei is ideal for newcomers and those wanting to refine their visual design skills.
